The Paris Franck & Fils department store gave me carte blanche to decorate the shop with Mia Zia colors. I designed a set for all the shop windows, displays for the collections of outfits and accessories, the V. Barkowski home linens, the collection of one-of-a-kind Maasai pieces, and a presentation of Fondation Sahart with artist François Lelong.

I wanted to take the project to the ultimate, so I even selected the music playing on the store’s sound system.
J’ai voulu faire les choses jusqu’au bout et ai créé une play list qui a été diffusée dans le magasin pendant toute la durée de l’exposition.

The exhibition of Francis Lelong was part of the set up « Desert Red » that I have put together fom the department store Frank & Fils. At that time the Sahart Foundation strongly linked with Mia Zia.
L’exposition de François Lelong dans le cadre de la scénographie que j’ai mise en place pour Frank & Fils faisait partie intégrante de mon travail puisque à ce moment-là la fondation Sahart avait un lien étroit avec Mia Zia.
Some history…
The Sahart Foundation was set up in 1997 and had the aim to give artists the opportunity to come and express themselves in complete calm, without any material constraints, in a context that was favourable to inspiration, in the medina of Marrakesh or in Saharan surroundings in a mineral location with a stimulating atmosphere.
Russian, Belgian, French, Moroccan, German, Spanish, Iralian and British painters, photographers and poets came to work at the foundation for several months and swap impressions with the craftsmen and people of Marrakesh.
Un peu d’histoire…
La fondation Sahart a vu le jour à Marrakech en 1997 et a été le lieu de toutes les aventures et celui de toutes les histoires écrites par des artistes de diverses nationalités qui y ont vécu des expériences fantastiques hautes en couleurs et riches de rencontres.
Dans un cadre de vie exceptionnel, un riad au cœur de la médina de Marrakech ou un campement aux confins du désert, la Fondation s’est lancé un défi permanent : offrir à des artistes du monde entier, l’occasion d’être libre de « créer pour soi, de travailler sans contrainte lors de leurs séjours pouvant durer jusqu’à 3 mois.
François Lelong: “A good understanding of nomadism”
Undoubtedly, the defining characteristic of nomadism is perpetual motion and travel, constant progress towards an incessantly readjusted goal (or idea). To reach it, however, the whole caravan has its own favorite paths, inevitably returning to the same wells and springs for refreshment and rest before taking to the trail again.
The approach is something François Lelong, a young artist born in Lille, and Fondation Sahart (Valérie Barkowski, share, in a way: Lelong is always circling back to Marrakesh and the desert, sources of new discoveries, new installations, new works, and new projects whenever he beholds them.
This exhibit throws open the doors of his adventures and experiences in the desert, on the border of the Western Sahara and in the “Pink City.” It features a selection of paintings, as well as photographs of installations he made during his desert sojourns between 2002 and 2003. It is also an opportunity to discover the fantastic world of a young man with a broad palette of talents and techniques for sharing his emotions.
François Lelong : « D’un nomadisme bien compris »
Le propre du nomadisme est sans aucun doute le mouvement et le déplacement perpétuels, la progression constante vers un but (une idée) sans cesse réajusté. Mais pour l’atteindre, toute la caravane a « ses » routes de prédilection qui, inévitablement repassent par les mêmes puits, les mêmes sources pour se régénérer, se reposer avant de reprendre la piste… Et dans l’histoire entre François Lelong , jeune artiste d’origine lilloise et la Fondation Sahart (Valérie Barkowski), il y a un peu de cela : de ces constants retours du peintre à Marrakech et dans le désert, sources chaque fois de nouvelles découvertes, de nouvelles installations, de nouvelles œuvres et de nouveaux projets…
Cette exposition vous ouvre les portes de ses aventures et expériences dans le désert, en lisière de Sahara occidental et dans la Ville Rose, par le biais d’une sélection de tableaux et de photos d’installations qu’il y a réalisés lors de ses séjours effectués entre 2002 et 2003. C’est aussi l’occasion de découvrir le monde fantastique d’un jeune homme qui a plus d’une technique à sa palette pour nous faire partager ses émotions.
