V.Barkowski is taking the summer off From August V.Barkowski is taking the summer off
From August 1st to August 24th, our Marrakech boutique is slipping out of office.
Time to step away. Not to disappear — but to drift, refill, and return with clearer light and saltier skin.

We’re chasing slower days, textured moments, and thoughts that stretch out with the tide.
The atelier, too, is winding down, because craftsmanship deserves its own summer.

Our online shop remains open at valeriebarkowski.shop,
though dispatches may move to a more meditative rhythm. Good things, as ever, take time.

📍We’ll be back on 25 August, at 142 Arset Aouzel, Dar Bacha, ready to welcome you into a world where detail is everything and time is never wasted.

Summer’s calling. We’re answering, with bare feet, linen bags, and the promise of what comes next.

We are a product, a brand, a workshop, a riad in M We are a product, a brand, a workshop, a riad in Marrakech, a family, a bunch of passionated people, a group of artisans with golden hands, we are explorers, we are do-ers, we are makers, we twist the world, we respect, we believe, we stand for our ideas, we try to do our share in this mad world. All the beauty that surrounds us, all our super clients from all over the world, the commitment of our team… All of this gives us the power to move on and to shout out proudly that we love our job and the way we do it.⁣
Thank you to all the beautiful souls that cross our path and walk with us since so many years.⁣
Happy Sunday.⁣

On image 2, @quentinwilbaux my dear, dear friend, talented architect and partner in crime with whom i restored several riads. #marrakech would definitely not been the same without him, for me and even for many people who dont know him. His role, his knowledge, his thesis on the architecture of the medina, his integrity in all his restorations,...
Feeling so grateful that our paths crossed 30 years ago. 🌴

A huge thank you to all of them.

The Art of Passementerie⁣ ⁣ Nil, Yumi, Aya, Ri The Art of Passementerie⁣
⁣
Nil, Yumi, Aya, Ribbon… several of our designs are detailed with passementerie—an ancestral craft that became part of my creative vocabulary from the moment I arrived in Marrakech. I was immediately drawn to its precision and quiet sophistication.⁣
⁣
Passementerie is an age-old tradition found in several cultures, but the craftsmanship in Morocco is particularly refined. These small hand-made thread balls, originally used as buttons on djellabas and caftans, quickly became part of my own reinterpretation of textile detail.⁣
⁣
Reimagined away from their original function, they now bring rhythm and texture to cushions, bed linen, table linen, scarves or even jewelry.⁣
A discreet yet essential detail—bridging heritage and contemporary codes, and quietly defining each piece with intention.⁣

"From Journeys to Creations, a Life of Textiles"⁣
⁣
If my creations carry the essence of travel, it is because I have always been a nomad at heart. I grew up in Belgium, facing the North Sea, my gaze drawn beyond the horizon, always longing for elsewhere.⁣
Some places have left a lasting imprint. Russia, where I worked as an art broker in the early ‘90s and, almost by necessity, designed my first linen collections. Morocco, where I settled in 1996 after falling in love with the medina and its artisans. India, where I developed several brands. Vietnam, where I led the artistic direction of Mekong Plus, supporting vulnerable communities. And today, Egypt, where I am immersed in a new, inspiring project.⁣
Travel, for me, is more than movement—it is a creative catalyst. It sharpens my vision, infuses my work with color, texture, and sensation. Every place, every encounter, sparks a new story, an idea waiting to take shape.⁣
Yet Marrakech remains my anchor. It is here that I have put down roots, opening Dar Kawa, my atelier, and my store. And because travel is a privilege, I now approach it differently—with awareness, intention, and a desire to reduce my carbon footprint.⁣

This necklace tells a story—a unique piece made from vintage silver rings, Malian metal beads, and passementerie cords. Each element reflects moments from my travels, carefully gathered and assembled with quiet intention in my workshop. Surrounded by objects that hold memories, I create these pieces in rare moments of calm, letting the freedom of forms, colours, and textures inspire me.⁣

Red has been part of my DNA for as long as I can r Red has been part of my DNA for as long as I can remember. At 11, I chose red and white wallpaper for my bedroom—two colours that have stayed with me, recurring throughout my work. In 2001, I transformed my boutiques into a deep red cocoon. Every detail embraced the colour, creating a complete sensory experience.⁣
⁣
Today, red continues to appear across my collections: bed, bath, and table linens, tarbouch lamps, tassels, fringes, and embroidery. If you have a specific shade in mind, send us your Pantone reference at vbstore@valeriebarkowski.com. We’ll craft a bespoke piece, tailored to your vision.⁣

"Reconnect with Your Inner Child in Marrakech" S "Reconnect with Your Inner Child in Marrakech"

Start the year with a touch of wonder by visiting Ramakéch, a unique sculpture park created by French artist Jean-François Fourtou, nestled in the Palmeraie of Marrakech. This immersive experience takes you out of time and into a dreamlike universe shaped by the artist's childhood memories.

With tenderness and poetry, Jean-François Fourtou designs houses and gardens inhabited by giant animals, intriguing characters, and disorienting architecture: upside-down houses, tilted structures, or oversized creations. A singular place where the worlds of Lewis Carroll and Tim Burton collide, promising to transform your perception of reality.

"The Timeless Journey of the Tassel"⁣ ⁣ The ta "The Timeless Journey of the Tassel"⁣
⁣
The tassel, now the iconic signature of my brand, was born in 1997 during a trip to northern Morocco. Inspired by the mendil—a traditional scarf adorned with tassels (chichiattes) and tied around the hips by the women of the Rif—I incorporated this cultural element into my first designs. At the time, tassels were a tradition unique to the north of Morocco and were not part of the craft culture in Marrakech.⁣
⁣
Since then, the tassel has taken on a life of its own—delicate on a bag, bold and royal on a babouche, or discreetly charming on a table napkin or bed and bath linen. It remains timeless, a subtle nod to Moroccan heritage with a contemporary twist.⁣

Hand-embroidered geometric patterns are at the heart of my creations. While not directly inspired by Morocco, they naturally align with my collections, where simplicity and craftsmanship intertwine. Karo (vertical and horizontal lines) and Yam (our iconic dot) embody minimalism and timeless aesthetics that have always been part of my creative DNA, subtly enhancing cushion covers, bed linen, and table linen with elegance and refinement.⁣
