A small fabric label, sewn. A small yet nothing that says it all. This piece of cloth is the trace of the owner of a garment. This is the link that allows the shirt or dress not to be lost in a mountain of other garments ready to be washed. So these laundry tags are the hallmark of the “dhobi wallahs”, employees of the laundry company.
Une petite étiquette en tissu, cousue. Un petit rien qui résume pourtant tout. Ce bout de tissu, c’est la trace du propriétaire d’un vêtement. C’est le lien qui permet à la chemise ou à la robe de ne pas être perdues dans une montagne d’autres affaires prêtes à être lavées. Cette étiquette, c’est le trait distinctif des « dhobi wallahs », les employés des laveries.
When I stay at the Yacht Club in Mumbai, somebody comes every morning to pick up my laundry. The service is independent of the hotel. Every time my clothes is picked up I fear that the entire laundry bag will get lost and not return … Because when i think of the dhobi wallahs who work near Mahalaxmi station, I endlessly wonder how is it possible not to mix up these loads of laundry coming from all parts of town.
Quand je séjourne au Yacht Club de Mumbaï, on vient chaque matin chercher mon linge. Le service est indépendant de l’hôtel. A chaque départ, je ne peux m’empêcher de me demander si l’entièreté du sac à vêtements reviendra… Car à voir travailler ces dhobi wallahs près de Mahalaxmi station, je me demande sans fin comment est-il possible de ne pas mélanger les pièces des uns et des autres.
The answer is simple: thanks to a small label. A piece of fabric sewn on my clothes that are delivered in the evening wrapped in a brown paper package tied with a cotton rope. Everything is neatly folded. Inside of each garment a sheet of newspaper is inserted to ensure the holding of folding. Everything is spotless.
La réponse est simple : grâce à une petite étiquette. Un morceau de tissu cousu sur mes vêtements que je réceptionne le soir emballés dans un paquet de papier kraft ficelé avec une corde en coton. Tout est soigneusement plié. Est déposée à l’intérieur de chaque vêtement une feuille de journal pour assurer la tenue du pliage. Tout est impeccable.
The use is so Indian that I got the idea to twist this apparently so trivial label. For NO-MAD, and its packagings, I chose fabric labels … inspired by the practices of the dhobi wallas, a wink from their “laundry tags”. So Indian, so traditional,, so in line with the philosophy of NO-MAD.
L’usage est si indien qu’il m’est venue l’idée de détourner cette étiquette d’apparence si anodine. Pour NO-MAD et son packaging, j’ai choisi des étiquettes en tissu… une inspiration des pratiques des dhobi wallahs, un clin d’œil par rapport à ces « laundry tags » si traditionnels, si indiens, tellement en accord avec la philosophie de NO-MAD.
