Lamu bath linen was born in Asilah

Lamu bath linen with pompons. An idea born from a journey. An idea that has now more than 20 years. In 1996, I was on vacation in Asilah, near the sea. It was my first time in northern Morocco. I discovered the region and the textile traditions when I was struck by the mendil, that striped red and white or blue and white cloth worn by women working in the fields.

Le linge de bain Lamu. Une idée née d’un voyage. Une idée qui a aujourd’hui plus de 20 ans. En 1996, j’étais en vacances à Asilah, près du large. C’était ma première fois dans le nord du Maroc. Je découvrais la région et les traditions textiles lorsque j’ai été frappée par le mendil, cette étoffe rayée rouge et blanc ou bleu et blanc que portent les femmes travaillant aux champs.

I sought its source, its history which is actually in Chefchaouen. And I immersed myself in the world of the mendil, I looked for all the possible variants and the oldest pieces in the flea markets of the region … The idea was gradually forging: transform this cloth into bath linen, Lamu.
J’ai cherché sa source, son histoire qui se situe en réalité à Chefchaouen. Je me suis immergée dans l’univers du mendil, j’ai cherché toutes les variantes possibles et les modèles les plus anciens dans les brocantes de la région… L’idée se forgeait peu à peu : transformer cette étoffe en linge de bain, Lamu.

Training to make pompons

My timeless bath towel style was initially produced by a manufacturer who forced me to order 600 terry towels. Would I be able to sell them? The interest was manifested and little by little I wanted to overcome an additional constraint: the fact that the pompons, called « chichiates », occurred only in the north of Morocco. I was obliged to send my towels to Asilah … Little by little, I trained women in Marrakech. One, two, ten and then hundreds.

Former aux pompons

Mon modèle d’éponge intemporel a initialement été produit chez un fabricant qui m’obligeait à lui commander 600 pièces. Serais-je capable ou non de les vendre ? L’intérêt s’est manifesté et peu à peu, j’ai voulu surmonter une contrainte supplémentaire : le fait que les pompons, nommés chichiates, se produisaient uniquement dans le nord du Maroc. J’étais obligée d’envoyer mes éponges à Asilah … Petit à petit, j’ai donc formé des femmes à Marrakech. Une, deux, dix et puis des centaines.

A timeless style

Lamu bath linen has traveled around the world over these 20 years. It is loved to the point of being copied by major international brands or merchants of the souks in Marrakech but still part of my V.Barkowski collection. Every year, I bring variations, new colors. The Lamu bath linen of yesterday is in line with today … timelessness is essential. I like the idea that this style, initiator of the V.Barkowski brand still exists. It is a classic, a must.

Un modèle intemporel

Le linge de bain Lamu a fait le tour du monde en 20 ans. Il est aimé au point d’être copié par de grandes enseignes internationales ou des commerçants des souks de Marrakech. Il fait toujours partie de la collection V.Barkowski. Chaque année, je lui apporte des variations, de nouvelles couleurs. Le linge de bain Lamu d’hier s’accorde à celui d’aujourd’hui… l’intemporalité est essentielle. J’aime l’idée que ce modèle initiateur de la marque V.Barkowski existe toujours. C’est un classique, un incontournable.

This V.Barkowski bath linen with pompons is available in 4 colors : white, dark grey, water and amber. The different styles are the following : Bath towel with pompons 100cm x 150cm, hand towel with pompons 50cm x 100cm, face towel with pompon 30cm x 50cm, bath mat with pompons 54cm x 90cm.
