These photos were taken in a workshop in Jaipur, where block-print on textiles is an age-old craft.
The design is carved onto a block of wood, which is then soaked in the pigmented ink and pressed on lengths of fabric stretched out on tables that are about 6 meters (18 feet) long. The tools and motions required for this ancestral technique have survived intact. This specificity of my approach consisted in simplifying the process and reducing the number of layers that are traditionally printed : making Indian exuberance simple and legible.

Ces images ont été réalisées dans l’atelier de Jaipur, berceau des techniques de l’impression au bloc. Le motif est sculpté dans un bloc en bois, qui est trempé dans la peinture pigmentée puis appliqué sur des tissus tendus à l’horizontal sur des tables mesurant à peu près 6 m de long. Cette technique ancestrale perdure avec le même outillage et la même gestuelle. La particularité de mon approche a été de simplifier les processus et les différentes couches traditionnellement appliquées : rendre simple.
