A decisive encounter
There are people who change the heart of a life. For me, Françoise Dorget is one of those. She is related to my creative life. She is the founder of the Paris Caravane store and brand, sold now. Françoise Dorget too has her heart in Morocco. In 1996, when I moved to Marrakech, following the advice of a friend I rent Françoise Dorget her house in Asilah. I had barely stepped inside that I felt at home … a feeling that I rarely had. Everything in the house was talking to me. I would not have changed anything. It was a kind of challenging.
Une rencontre déterminante
Il y a des personnes qui changent le cours d’une vie. Pour moi, Françoise Dorget fait partie de celles-là. Elle est liée à ma vie créative. Elle est la fondatrice de l’enseigne parisienne Caravane, aujourd’hui revendue. Françoise Dorget elle aussi a son cœur au Maroc. En 1996, je posais mes valises à Marrakech et et suite aux conseils d’une amie, je loue une maison à Asilah, la maison de Françoise Dorget. A peine arrivée je m’y suis sentie chez moi… un sentiment que j’ai rarement eu. Tout dans la maison me parlait. Je n’aurais rien changé. C’était interpellant.
The birth of V.Barkowski
I met Françoise Dorget several times after that … affinities were obviously woven. At the time, I was crisscrossing Morocco to set up my first personal collection of linens. Three years of research and work were needed to carry out this project, as Moroccan craftsmanship was then compartmentalized. My first production in hand, I directly thought of Françoise. I called her to offer to sell my pieces in her Caravan shop in Paris … I sent her two parcels and I waited. One week, two, one month and two. In my heart, I had sworn to stop my collection if Françoise refused to sell it or did not like it. No news, I finally took my phone and I called … she had already sold everything and wanted to place a new order. The brand V. Barkowski was really born. It was the mektoub … it was written as they say in Arabic. So yes, I can really say that Françoise Dorget has marked my life. For a few weeks, she kept my big creative project on hold.

J’ai rencontré Françoise à plusieurs reprises ensuite… les affinités se sont naturellement tissées. A l’époque, je sillonnais le Maroc pour mettre en place ma première collection personnelle de linge de maison. Trois ans de recherche et de travail ont été nécessaires pour mener à bien ce projet, tant l’artisanat marocain était alors compartimenté. Ma première production en main, j’ai directement songé à Françoise. Je l’ai appelée pour lui proposer de vendre mes pièces dans sa boutique Caravane à Paris… Je lui ai envoyé deux colis puis j’ai attendu. Une semaine, deux, un mois puis deux. Dans mon for intérieur, je m’étais jurée d’arrêter ma collection si Françoise refusait de la vendre. Si elle ne l’aimait pas, qui l’aimerait? Sans nouvelle, j’ai pris mon téléphone et je l’ai rappelée… elle avait déjà tout vendu et souhaitait me passer une nouvelle commande. La marque V. Barkowski était réellement née. C’était le mektoub… c’était écrit comme on dit en arabe. Alors oui, je peux vraiment dire que Françoise Dorget a marqué ma vie. Pendant quelques semaines, elle a tenu mon grand projet créatif en suspens.
Connexions, her book
Today, Françoise Dorget is releasing a book: Connexions. She publishes a part of her Moroccan rugs collection. But not only. She nurtures her book with her knowledge of design, art and crafts by associating each rug with a piece of art or a photograph. A cultural link is then woven between the two images facing each other. She speaks about weaving techniques, specialties from each region of the country while inserting works by designers such as Philippe Starck or Isamo Noguchi. A beautiful book that should be bought without delay.
Son ouvrage, Connexions
Aujourd’hui, Françoise édite un livre : Croisements. Elle y dévoile une partie de sa collection de tapis marocains. Mais pas uniquement. Elle nourrit son ouvrage de sa connaissance en design, en art et en savoir-faire en associant chaque tapis à une œuvre d’art ou une photographie. Se tisse alors un lien culturel parlant entre les deux images mises en vis-à-vis. Elle parle des techniques de tissage, des spécialités de chaque région du pays tout en insérant des œuvres de designers tels que Philippe Starck ou encore Isamo Noguchi. Un bel ouvrage à vous procurer sans plus attendre.
