Matthieu Ricard, the photographer
Matthieu Ricard, the Buddhist monk, the author, the lecturer, the scientist … And the photographer. I knew this plurality of the man but I really discovered the extent of his artistic talents during the meetings of Arles 2018. At this great meeting of photography amateurs, I admired the bamboo pavilion created by Colombian architect Simon Velez and his associate Stefana Simic. 40 pictures of the world taken by Matthieu Ricard between 1983 and 2017 were exhibited there.

Matthieu Ricard, le moine bouddhiste, l’auteur, le conférencier, le scientifique… Et le photographe. Je connaissais cette pluralité de l’homme mais j’ai réellement découvert l’étendue de ses talents artistiques lors des rencontres d’Arles 2018. A ce grand rendez-vous des amateurs de photographie, j’ai admiré le pavillon en bambou créé par l’architecte colombien, Simon Velez et son associée Stefana Simic. 40 clichés du monde pris par Mathieu Ricard entre 1983 et 2017 y étaient exposés.
A place filled with fundamental values
This monumental and ephemeral structure of 1000 m2, appeared to me as a place of serenity, introspection and meditation. It was totally echoing the appeasement that emanated from the photographs. These testify to a life dedicated to spirituality, to the human and natural intimacy, to altruism. Matthieu Ricard set his goal in Nepal, India, Argentina, Tibet, Chile, Bhutan … He captured landscapes, moments of life.
Un lieu empli de valeurs fondamentales
Cette structure, monumentale et éphémère de 1000 m2, m’est apparue comme un lieu de sérénité où introspection et recueillement sont de mise. Elle faisait totalement écho à l’apaisement qui se dégageait des photographies. Celles-ci témoignent d’ailleurs d’une vie dédiée à la spiritualité, à l’intime humain & naturel, à l’altruisme. Mathieu Ricard a posé son objectif au Népal, en Inde, en Argentine, au Tibet, au Chili, au Bhoutan… Il a capturé des paysages, des moments de vie.
A marvel of impression
By visiting this exhibition entitled ‘Contemplation’, I could only be thoughtful and I was also amazed by the print outs of black and white large format photographs on traditional Japanese Awagami paper. This production technique dates from the 15th century.
Une merveille d’impression
En visitant cette exposition intitulée ‘Contemplation’, je n’ai pu qu’être poussée à la réflexion et j’ai aussi été émerveillée par l’impression des photographies argentiques en grand format et en noir et blanc sur du papier japonais traditionnel Awagami dont la technique de production remonte à 1400 ans.
