There are stripes that get entangled. Others which form rows. And there are still others which avoid each other. They are straight at times, at times wavy or even without any form or pattern. They come together or move away from each other. So they are colourful or even lack color.

Rayures par ci, par là

Il y a de ces rayures qui s’emmêlent. D’autres qui s’alignent. D’autres encore qui s’évitent. Elles sont droites, ondulées ou même déstructurées. Elles se rejoignent ou s’éloignent. Enfin elles aiment la couleur ou bien l’ignore.

They appear simple but often create a universe with myriads of possibilities, hues and shades. In my work, they express themselves. They have always inspired me. Whether they are formal or informal. They design the personality of a fabric, an object, an idea. The stripes are with me in my life, in my creations. They are associated with wisdom or originality, with sobriety or extravagance. They are exactly how i love them… timeless.

Elles semblent simples mais créent souvent un univers aux mille possibles, aux mille nuances. Dans mon travail, elles s’expriment. Elles m’inspirent depuis toujours. Qu’elles soient sérieuses ou farfelues. Elles dessinent avec élégance, la personnalité d’un tissu, d’un objet, d’une idée. Les rayures m’accompagnent dans ma vie, dans mes créations. Elles s’associent avec sagesse ou originalité, avec sobriété ou extravagance. Elles sont, comme je les aime… intemporelles.

And to say they had a negative, derogatory connotation… In the Middle Ages, they were worn by evil beings in paintings. For years, they symbolised imprisonment, deportation. Vertical, symmetrical stripes represented bars denying freedom. Until they pivot horizontally, they are associated with the wind, sea, beach and give rise to the traditional drawing of a sailor’s outfit. The negative image which stuck to the stripes has gradually flown away to pave the way for their emancipation, for their interpretation.
Et dire qu’elles eurent longtemps une connotation négative, péjorative. Au Moyen-Age, elles habillaient les êtres maléfiques des peintures. Des années durant, elles ont symbolisé l’emprisonnement, la déportation. Verticales, symétriques, elles représentaient les barreaux privant de liberté. Jusqu’à ce qu’elles pivotent à l’horizontal, qu’elles s’associent notamment au vent, à la mer, à la plage et donnent naissance au dessin traditionnel de la marinière. L’image négative qui collait aux rayures s’est alors peu à peu envolée pour laisser libre cours à leur émancipation, à leur interprétation.
