Tarbouche rouge freakyfauna tumbler source

A tarbouche is a flat topped brimless hat which can be traced as far back as Ancient Greece. The hat later became popular primarily in Muslim countries, especially during the 18th century. Tarbouches eventually began to replace the traditional turban which is still commonly worn today. Numerous variations exist of the original style but its most traditional version is made of red felt and decorated with a silk tassel.

Linge VBarkowski stylisme

I first used the tarbouche in 2003 for a photo shoot of my VB home linen collection. Most of the collection was produced in Morocco and its details inspired from the traditional handicrafts of that country. My intention was to clearly show that my inspiration and the product were originating from there.

During my meandering in the local souks I purchased traditional plain felt tarbouches and had them embroidered with the patterns of my collections.

This version is decorated with a very traditonal Maroccan trimming. The ornamental beads are traditional in Morocco, and entirely handcroched.

One of a kind item.
This tarbouch looks deceptively simple, and making it was a technical achievement. It is made of a single hand turned thread coiled in the shape of a hat.

And then I created the ceramic “tarbouche” lampshade, which is currently produced in a vast array of colors and can be purchased at the concept store ” 33 Rue Majorelle” in Marrakech.
